Things to see and do

If you enjoy uncovering local history, there are a number of museums in and around Scunthorpe including the North Lincolnshire Museum and the Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft, where you’ll find a huge collection of old buses and other vehicles.

Shopping areas in the town include The Foundry Shopping Centre, Parishes Shopping Centre, and the out-of-town North Lincolnshire Shopping Park. If you want to get a breath of fresh air, you can take a drive to Elsham Hall Country Park, Ashby Ville Nature Reserve or Normanby Hall Country Park. For the golfers among you, Grange Park Golf Course and Forest Pines Golf Course are both close-by.

If you’re a sports fan, you can watch Scunthorpe United F.C. play their home football matches at Glanford Park, or visit Heslam Park to see Scunthorpe Rugby Club play. In the evenings, entertainment can be found at The Baths Hall and The Plowright Theatre.

Education

Scunthorpe is home to a number of good schools and colleges for children of all ages. Frodingham Infant School and Bushfield Road Infant School are rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, while further and higher education is on offer at Humber UTC and North Lindsey College.

Although Scunthorpe doesn’t have its own university, it’s easy to get to some of the best universities in the UK by either train or car, which is perfect if your children want to study from home or be close to family while living in student accommodation. These include the University of Lincoln, the University of Sheffield, and Sheffield Hallam University.

Getting to Scunthorpe

Scunthorpe is close to the M180 and just a short drive from the M18 and M62, with the motorways offering good road links to nearby towns and cities. The town’s train station is on the South TransPennine Line, with regular services to Sheffield, Doncaster, Cleethorpes and Manchester.

To get to Sheffield, the journey from Scunthorpe takes around 50 minutes by car or one hour by train. Doncaster is close by, with the car journey taking just 35 minutes and the train taking 25 minutes, while Lincoln can be reached in 45 minutes by car. Leeds is an hour’s drive away from Scunthorpe travelling via the M62, and Manchester is one hour 45 minutes away by car or one hour 55 minutes by train.

The best way to reach London is by train with a change at Doncaster station. The capital can be reached in two hours 40 minutes. For international travel, Humberside Airport is close-by while Leeds Bradford Airport and Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield offer flights to destinations across the world.
