Things to see and do
Mansfield contains a large indoor shopping centre called Four Seasons, in which you’ll find many popular UK shops. Furthermore, there are shops just outside the city centre, called The Rosemary Centre, and several retail parks too. For a more extensive range of shops a little further afield, Nottingham city centre will cater for all your needs.
Mansfield was previously a mining town, with Pleasley Colliery as a source of coal. Pleasley Colliery has since been changed into a museum about mining in the area, and you can learn about the industrial history of Mansfield. You can still see many of the original features of the colliery, which is currently being restored and made into a mining heritage site.
Mansfield is just a short drive away from Vicar Water Country Park. Spanning an impressive 80 Hectares, and with a diverse range of rich woodland, heathland and grassland, you wouldn’t guess this was once a colliery spoil tip. Here you can experience panoramic views of the surrounding areas, and try to spot some of the rare wildlife, which includes kingfishers, tawny owls, hares and foxes. For those who enjoy fishing, an angling club uses one of the two large ponds in the park.
Mansfield is a stone’s throw away from Sherwood Forest, well known for being the home of Robin Hood. Here you can explore the scenery and history through walking, cycling, or horse-riding.
