How are the transport links in South Wales?

South Wales is served by train lines along the coast and some valleys. The South Wales Main Line runs from Bristol Parkway to Swansea, including a high speed link from Cardiff Central to London Paddington, which takes two hours and 5 minutes. There are also major stations at Newport, Pontypridd and Port Talbot.

The M4 motorway is the main thoroughfare through South Wales, providing easy road access west to Swansea and east to Cardiff, Newport and beyond. A journey from Swansea to Cardiff via the M4 takes an hour along the M4, or 50 minutes by train. Cardiff is a 50 minute drive or train journey from Bristol.

The A449, A4042, A470 and A465 connect coastal areas to the South Wales valleys and towns including Merthyr Tydfil, Abergavenny and the Brecon Beacons National Park.

South Wales’ only international airport is Cardiff Airport.

What is there to see and do in in South Wales?

South Wales is known for its lovely coastline. The region’s most popular beaches are found on the Gower Peninsula near Swansea, including Rhossili Bay, Three Cliffs Bay and Langland Bay. Rest Bay in Porthcawl is also popular with surfers and families, while Penarth near Cardiff has a small pier including a cinema at the pier pavilion.

As for history, St Fagans National History Museum explores Welsh life through the ages, while Big Pit National Coal Museum takes visitors on underground tours of the mines. Caerphilly Castle is the second largest castle in the UK, while Raglan Castle and Tintern Abbey are must-visits in Monmouthshire. Other historical attractions include the National Museum and Art Gallery in Cardiff, Dylan Thomas Birth Place in Swansea and Caerleon Roman Baths.

Mountain biking fans will not be disappointed in South Wales. Bike Park Wales at Gethin Woods, Merthyr Tydfil, is a purpose-built bike park with a large network of downhill trails and lift-assisted single-track routes. There are also popular trails at Cwmcarn Forest and Afan Forest Park.

The Welsh Capital, Cardiff, is home to a number of major attractions including world-class sport at the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff Arms Park (with Premier League action found at Liberty Stadium in Swansea), and theatre at the Wales Millennium Centre, Chapter Arts Centre, New Theatre and Sherman Cymru. Cardiff Bay is an ever-popular location for boat rides, walks, restaurants and events on Roald Dahl Plass.

Natural attractions in South Wales include Cosmeston Lakes Country Park, Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes and the Brecon Beacons National Park.

What are the educational facilities and options available in South Wales?

South Wales is home to a number of esteemed higher education institutions including the University of South Wales, Cardiff University, the University of Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Swansea University. 

 

Help to Buy Wales is a government scheme which will provide financial assistance for people looking to buy a new home.
