Mayor of London Boris Johnson opened the new Cycle Super Highway yesterday.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has officially opened the new Oval to Pimlico Cycle Super Highway 5, offering cyclists at Barratt London’s Nine Elms Point development a safe route across Vauxhall Bridge.
The two-way cycle lane is 1.4 km long and is just over an 11 minute walk from Nine Elms Point or a three minute cycle ride from the development, and provides a safe cycle route for riders of all ages and abilities. And the bridge is already bringing in fantastic results, with a 29% increase in people using the bridge compared to just three weeks ago – that’s more than 750 cyclists already.
According to the Transport for London (TfL) website, the Cycle Super Highway also features a shared footway area, “pedestrian crossing and junction improvements, and a redesign of shared cyclist and pedestrian spaces to improve safety and comfort”.
On the fully protected route through the Vauxhall gyratory and across the bridge, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, commented: “We’ve brought a bit of Amsterdam to the unlikely environs of Vauxhall – opening up access to huge swathes of south London for safer cycling. I’ve always believed that more Londoners would cycle if they felt safer, and this new route already proves it”.
Leon Daniels, TfL’s Managing Director of Surface Transport, said: “Vauxhall is an area which will see tremendous change in the next decade, with the Nine Elms development, the Northern line extension and our wider plans to transform the Vauxhall Gyratory to two-way traffic. This new dedicated route through the area is the product of many years hard work by our designers, engineers and contractors. I would also like to thank local people for having borne with us while the work has taken place. This new, direct route will make cycling through the area safer for all.”
Nine Elms Point is made up of 645 stylish one-bedroom suites, one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments and penthouses. The development epitomises easy living – located next to the future Nine Elms underground station, above a new flagship Sainsbury’s superstore, near the Cycle Super Highway and equipped with an on-site fitness suite, residents at Nine Elms Point have convenience at their fingertips.
