Sumptuous specialities at Catford Broadway Market

Catford Green residents can enjoy delights along the recently refurbished Catford Broadway.

Catford is well known for its eclectic shops and stalls along the Broadway, with the Catford Broadway Market as a long-standing feature. Catford Broadway embraces the borough's creativity, diversity and entrepreneurship, and with the recent street refurbishments, the market is a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly place. Residents can shop, eat and relax and enjoy entertainment from local artists at the market, which is just a six minute walk from Barratt London’s Catford Green development.

Catford’s street market began in the 1880s, originally in Rushey Green. Moving into Catford Broadway in 1929, it provided a range of stalls selling a mixture of food, clothes, crockery and carpets but was forced to close for an extended period during the war, where Catford suffered serious bomb damage. In 1976 the market was revived, and is still going strong nearly 40 years on. On the market re-opening, Karen Alleyne, Founder of local eatery Inapikkle, commented: “It’s great to be back… [The market] has given us the opportunity to grow the business and connect with people in different ways”.

Catford Broadway Market runs Monday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday, and on the last Saturday of the month from 10:00 – 16:00 residents can experience an enhanced market. The enhanced market showcases the best culinary and artistic delights that South East London has to offer – from street food to crafts and live music. Savvy locals can enjoy delights from London’s best food traders, ranging from Sardinian delicacies at Capo Caccia Fine Food through to sumptuous muffins by Mr Muffin.

Recently over £1.5 million of funding was provided by the Mayor of London, plus an additional £600,000 from Lewisham Council to deliver a number of improvements to Catford Broadway, designed to attract more people the area. Catford Broadway is now officially classed as a ‘pedestrian’ zone, and locals can enjoy the refurbishments to the street, such as new lighting and seating, improved condition and look of shop fronts, and better public facilities at the market.

Catford Green offers a range of one, two and three-bedroom apartments in this vibrant location. Residents are just a six minute walk from Catford Broadway, have access to 54 acres of Ladywell Fields Park on their doorstep, and are just 20 minutes from Charing Cross by National Rail. From new stylish homes, recently improved community facilities to a redeveloped shopping centre and newly pedestrianised Broadway, residents can be part of a rejuvenated community.
