Located in North Staffordshire and close to the M6, Stoke on Trent is a vibrant city with a rich industrial heritage, which inspired its nickname ‘The Potteries’. Stoke is a diverse place to live, with something for the whole family to enjoy, from first-rate shopping to open parkland, museums and sports facilities.

Things to see and do

At The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery you can find out more about the ceramics industry in Staffordshire through the ages, while other museums in the city include Etruria Industrial Museum and Gladstone Pottery Museum.

In the city centre you’ll find the historic Stoke Minster, along with high street shopping, cafes and restaurants. Intu Potteries and Trentham Shopping Village are purpose-built shopping malls, while Regent Theatre and the New Vic Theatre provide evening entertainment with shows spanning drama, comedy, music and dance.

Stoke is a surprisingly green city, with lots of parks including Turnhurst Jubilee Wood, Berryhill Fields, Fenton Park, Park Hall Country Park and Westport Lake. If you’ve got children this is a big positive, providing plenty of choice for gentle afternoon walks and summertime play spaces.

If you enjoy taking part in sports, there are lots of good facilities in the city including Stoke Ski Centre, Kilnworx Climbing Centre and Waterworld Stoke. If you prefer spectating, you can see Stoke City F.C play their home football matches at the Britannia Stadium.

Family-friendly attractions near to Stoke include Trentham Gardens and Monkey Forest, Chatterley Whitfield Heritage Country Park, and Alton Towers theme park, which is also home to the popular CBeebies Land.


If you’re moving to Stoke with children, it’s good to know that there are lots of excellent schools in the city. Outstanding schools as rated by Ofsted include St Mary’s Catholic Academy, St Peter’s Catholic Primary School, St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School, St Mary’s CofE VA Primary School and St Joseph’s College.

Independent schools in Stoke include North Road Academy, Unity School, Phoenix U16, Sporting Stars Academy and Park Avenue Girls’ High School. For higher education, Stoke is home to the main campus of Staffordshire University.

Getting to Stoke

Situated close to junction 15 and 16 of the M6, Stoke is well connected to the rest of the country by road. The train station is on the West Coast Mainline, with regular services to places including London, Birmingham and Manchester. There are also lots of cycle routes throughout the city.

For commuters it’s easy to get to and from Stoke. Birmingham is around 45 minutes away from the city by either car or train, while Manchester is a one hour drive north, or 45 minutes away by train. To get to and from London, the Virgin Trains service takes just one hour 35 minutes, while the car journey takes much longer at around two hours 45 minutes.

If you’re going on holiday or travelling abroad for business, Manchester Airport, East Midlands Airport and Birmingham Airport are all within easy reach of Stoke, so there will be plenty of flying options no matter what your destination.
