Things to see and do

If you love shopping, there are lots of places to enjoy a spot of retail therapy in Morpeth, whether you’re browsing the town’s boutiques or buying from local sellers at the regular market. There’s also a monthly farmer’s market, where you’ll find fresh produce and food stalls.

The town is home to the Bagpipe Museum and Northumberland Arts and Craft Gallery, while The National Trust’s Wallington House is only a short drive away, where you can explore the estate on foot or bike. 

When you want to enjoy the great outdoors, you can take a walk through Carlisle Park, go for a day trip to Northumberland National Park or visit Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Druridge Bay is especially popular, where you can stroll along the beach and explore the sand dunes. 

The town hosts The Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering each year, with traditional dances and music over the course of three days in April. Other attractions nearby include Woodhorn Museum Archives and Country Park, Dinosaur Encounter Adventure Golf, Whitehouse Farm Centre, Stanton Hall Gardens and Northumberland County Zoo.

Education

There are lots of excellent, top-rated schools in the local area, ideal if you’re moving to Morpeth with children. Morpeth First School, Abbeyfields First School, Morpeth Stobhillgate First School and The King Edward VI Academy are all rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

For older children thinking about further or higher education, Northumberland College is near to the town, while Newcastle is home to Newcastle University and Northumbria University.

Getting to Morpeth

Morpeth is 25 minutes from Newcastle by car or train, while the journey from Sunderland takes 50 minutes by car or just over one hour by train, changing once at Newcastle Central. The town is 45 minutes away from Durham by car or 50 minutes by train, changing in Newcastle.

Travelling from further afield, Morpeth is a two-hour and 15-minute drive from Edinburgh or just one hour 10 minutes by direct train from Edinburgh Waverley, while the journey from London takes just under four hours by train, changing once in Newcastle.

When you’re coming home from your holidays, the journey from Newcastle International Airport takes just 20 minutes by car.
