Transport Links

Barnard Castle is located on the A67 and has good transport links by road, connecting the town to the likes of Darlington, Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees. The two original train stations are now closed, with the nearest railway stations at Darlington and Bishop Auckland.

Travelling by car, Barnard Castle is around 20 minutes away from Darlington, 40 minutes from Stockton-on-Tees and 45 minutes from Middlesbrough where there are train links to London. Newcastle is just under one hour away from the town, while York can be reached in 1 hour 15 minutes. Going in the opposite direction further west, Penrith is 45 minutes from Barnard Castle via the A66, while Kendal can be reached in just under one hour.

For international travel, the closest airport is Durham Tees which is 35 minutes away by car.

Places of Interest

Barnard Castle is most famous for the Bowes Museum, an impressive collection of public art with paintings by the likes of Goya and El Greco. The museum is housed in a strikingly beautiful 19th century building, a grand setting for such a popular gallery. The town’s castle is also a major draw for visitors.

Barnard Castle itself is historic and charming, with the old town’s cobbled streets and Georgian architecture home to popular cafes, independent boutiques and restaurants including the famous Blagraves House. The town also hosts a weekly Wednesday market and a Saturday Farmer’s Market.

There are a number of historic sights close to the town, including Eggleston Hall Gardens and Eggleston Abbey, while children and adults alike will enjoy a visit to Tees dale Alpacas and Weathering Zoo and Animal Sanctuary. Aside from Barnard Castle, there are other fortifications close to the town including Raby Castle and Richmond Castle.

The town hosts lots of events throughout the year, including the Barnard Castle Meet, an annual carnival held in May and dating right back to the 19th century.

Education

New homes in Barnard Castle are within catchment for a number of ‘Outstanding’ schools, as rated by Ofsted, including St Mary’s Roman Catholic VA Primary School and Cotherstone Primary School. Barnard Castle School, an independent boarding school, is nearby while higher education is provided just a short drive away at Tees side University in Middlesbrough.
