The Top Universities in Newcastle

A vibrant and exciting city for students to call home, there are three universities in Newcastle. Whether you live in a central area such as Jesmond, a suburb like Blakelaw or another part of the North East, the Toon is popular for its pulsating nightlife and passionate culture. Here we’ll look into the universities you’ll find within the city itself.

Newcastle University

A red brick university that traces its roots all the way back to 1834 as the School of Medicine and Surgery, Newcastle University is one of the best higher education facilities in the North East. Offering more than 200 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate degrees, the university is known for its pioneering research and its student population of about 30,000. Many students are drawn to the extra-curricular activities, with over 200 different societies and sports clubs to choose from. Located in the heart of the city, Newcastle University is only around six miles from our Bedewell Court development not far from Jarrow.

Northumbria University

Just across the road from Newcastle University, this establishment is descended from the Rutherford College of Technology, which was founded in 1877. Previously known as Newcastle Polytechnic, and gaining university status in 1992, Northumbria is rated as one of the very best young universities in the world. It’s also one of the UK’s biggest, with over 30,000 students from more than 130 countries. Northumbria University has one of the country’s best city campuses, along with one of the highest rates for graduates entering professional and managerial roles.

Newcastle College University Centre

Away from the city’s two major universities, Newcastle College is a valid third option to consider. Providing further and higher education just across the River Tyne from Gateshead, the college is the largest in the North East, while the university centre offers more than 70 degrees. Over 16,000 students attend Newcastle College, which was founded in 1894 as Rutherford Memorial College and has a vocational emphasis focused on securing future employment.
