The temperatures dropped, crunchy yellow and orange leaves are on the ground, and pumpkin spice lattes have arrived which can only mean one thing, it’s officially spooky season. But which Londons borough is the spookiest?

As the City of London decorates its homes and gardens with everything ghoulish to celebrate the Halloween season, we wanted to determine which London borough is the ghostliest.

The boroughs were measured on the number of ghost sightings, cemeteries, spooky tours, supernatural beings, and Halloween events to determine their spooky ranking score.

So, let’s settle once and for all… which London borough is the spookiest?

Which borough takes the top spot for being the spookiest?

It's official Westminster is the spookiest borough in London! The borough scored 78 out of 100 based on our unearthly factors. The borough has had a spooktacular 45 ghost sightings, reports of 16 supernatural beings, 15 spooky tours to explore this Halloween along with 14 Halloween planned events. Yet, despite all these spooky happenings, the spookiest borough in London is home to zero cemeteries!

Which boroughs make the top five?

The beastly City of London borough came in second place with a creepy score of 39 out of 100. The ‘square mile’ area has 21 ghost sightings, 21 spooky tours, seven supernatural beings, one Halloween event yet zero cemeteries.

Enfield is the third spookiest borough scoring a frightening 33 out of 100. The wicked North London borough has seven cemeteries and 20 ghost sightings but scored zero on supernatural beings, Halloween events and spooky tours.

Bromley is in fourth place with a spooky score of 32 out of 100. The blood-curdling South London area has five cemeteries and 23 ghost sightings but came up short on supernatural beings, Halloween events and spooky tours - all scoring zero.

Tower Hamlets completes our top five with a creepy score of 31 out of 100. The ghoulish borough has 20 supernatural beings, six ghost sightings, 11 spooky tours, three Halloween events and one cemetery.

Which areas of London are the most haunted by ghosts?

Westminster takes first place for the most haunted ghostly borough with 45 sightings. Sherlock Homes’ infamous street Baker Street appears to be a ghost hotspot in Westminster, with three ghost sightings in total. There have been reports of 18th Century actress Sarah Siddons in her former Baker Street home as well as mysterious footprints and unexplained reflections in Baker Street station.

In Westminster, Buckingham Palace is also a hotspot for ghoulish legends with visitors saying they spotted a monk with chains one Christmas Day.

Speaking of famous UK buildings, No.10 Downing Street has been known for its paranormal activity with reports of mysterious cigar smoke in the basement and unexplained footsteps.

Bromley comes in second place for the most ghost sightings with an eery 23 sightings, with stories of an old sea captain haunting the Bromley United Services Club and the sound of footsteps, slamming on doors, and shaking of beds at The Chequers Inn.

The City of London borough is in third place with a scary total of 21 ghost sightings with spinetingling reports of voices being heard and the lifting of carpets at The Viaduct Tavern.

Which borough is haunted by the most supernatural beings?

When it comes to the borough haunted by supernatural beings such as famous vampires, ghosts and famous witches, Tower Hamlets comes out top with a staggering 20 sightings, most belonging to the Tower of London with 11 in total! Famous Tower ghosts include Henry VI, Guy Fawkes, Lady Jane Grey, and The White Lady.

Within Tower Hamlets, Bethnal Green is the supernatural hotspot with two supernatural being sightings. Sightings include Edmund Bonner, the former bishop of London, as well as women and children of the WW2 bombings.

Whitechapel, Blackwall Tunnel, The Ten Bells Pub, Turners Old Star Pub, Ragged School Museum, Wapping, and 84 Commercial Street all share one supernatural sighting in Tower Hamlets.

Westminster follows in second place with a whopping 16 supernatural sightings, four taking place in Westminster Abbey including a shadow of monk John Bradshaw and on a separate occasion, a supernatural sighting of a solider.

The City of London is the third borough with the most supernatural sightings with seven unearthly sightings with three in London tube stations: Liverpool Street station, Bank station, and Aldgate station. Sarah Whitehead, the black Nun, is said to haunt Bank Station, and there have been reports of plague victims and workers spotted in Liverpool Street Station.

Interestingly, there has only been one vampire sighting, which was the Highgate Vampire in Highgate cemetery in the 1970s.

Which borough is the least scary?

However, it’s not all spooks and ghouls, we wanted to uncover which boroughs have the least hauntings, supernatural beings, and spooky occurrences.

Our study revealed that if you’re scared of things that go bump in the night then you should head to Bexley, Harrow, and Kingston upon Thames as these boroughs all share the top spot for being the least spookiest boroughs, with an angelic score of just one out of 100.

Bexley, Harrow, and Kingston upon Thames all share just one ghost sighting each and have zero cemeteries, supernatural beings, Halloween events and spooky tours.

Where are the most Halloween events based?

Halloween event lovers should head to Kensington and Chelsea as well as Westminster as both boroughs come in first place for celebrating the spooky season. Kensington and Chelsea are home to some of the best trick-or-treating spots and there is also a spooktacular half-term Halloween party for families hosted at the Maxilla Social Club.

The haunted borough of Westminster has a variety of events, such as a shark walk in the sea life aquarium, an alien escape experience in Madame Tussauds and a Halloween takeover in the London dungeon.

Southwark is in second place with six spooky Halloween events at various locations, some of these being London tombs experience at London bridge, Halloween night at Ministry of Sound and a Rocky Horror brunch at The Great Exhibition.

Camden and Lambeth share third place with five Halloween events each, with Camden being another ideal spot for trick or treating due to its popularity and decorations. If parties are more your thing, there is a Halloween pub crawl at The Good Mixer pub and the Halloween Extravaganza at the UKDC dance studio.

Lambeth hosts numerous events for Halloween such as the London eye spooky sailing, Shrek’s Halloween adventure on the South bank and sinister circus brunch in Bar Elba.

Which area has the offers the most spooky tours?

The City of London is in first place for the most spooky tours offering 21 scary sights tours. Westminster comes in second place with 15 and Tower Hamlets takes third place with 11.

The City of London offers various walking spooky tours such as Jack the Ripper, magic witchcraft, and a ghost tour of London.

Westminster also offers walking tours based around different ghoulish characters such as Sweeny Todd and Sherlock Homes. This borough also offers ghostly and haunting tours.

Tower Hamlets follows in third place with 11 spooky tours including a witch tour, a London executioner walk and grim reaper tours.

Most haunted TV show sightings

We also wanted to explore the paranormal TV series Most Haunted and see what occurrences have happened in the capital city. In total, we found eight specific locations for the show’s hauntings, three in Westminster, two in Lambeth, two in Bromley, and one in Hackney.

Westminster’s hauntings take place in Aldwych Underground Station, Theatre Royal – Drury Lane and Madame Tussauds.

Aldwych Station was active from 1907 until 1994 and was once used as a bomb shelter. A motion detector went off and a figure was seen in the Aldwych Station episode.

Theatre Royal on Drury Lane opened in the early 1660s and still operates today. It is known as London’s oldest theatre site still in use and is reputed to be the most haunted theatre in the world.

Lambeth’s famous hauntings are Caesar’s Nightclub and the London Dungeon. Caesar’s nightclub was reportedly haunted by Ruth Ellis. The nightclub opened in 1929 and closed in 2010. At the time, it was London’s largest nightclub and has seen many famous faces such as Charlie Chaplin, The Kray twins, and The Rolling Stones.

The London Dungeon first opened in 1974 and was originally a wax exhibition but now creates live action scenes with ghoulish sets.

Bromley’s hauntings take place over two nights in Chislehurst Caves which are manmade tunnels and caverns covering 22 miles in Chislehurst. The tunnels were created for mining and have turned into a tourist hotspot.

Hackney’s episode revolves around Sutton House, a national trust Tudor house first built in 1535 and is one of the last remaining ones.
