London might be famous for its hustle and high-rises, but it’s also the comedy capital of the UK. From intimate open-mic nights to world-famous stages, stand-up comedy is one of the best ways to experience London at its liveliest. But which boroughs deliver the biggest laughs?
To find out, we mapped comedy venues and comedy nights across the 12 inner London boroughs, combining Google Maps ratings, audience sentiment, and search data. We assessed venue quality, positivity in reviews, and demand for comedy nights. Each borough was then given a weighted score to reveal where Londoners are laughing most.
With searches for “comedy club London” up 38% year-on-year, there’s never been a better time to grab a ticket, settle in, and let the capital crack you up. Whether you’re planning a visit or looking for a new home in London, our guide reveals the boroughs guaranteed to deliver the biggest laughs, because in this city, laughter really is the best medicine.
The funniest boroughs in London
1. Westminster
Drum roll, please - the funniest borough in London is Westminster.
Our research found it has the highest number of 5-star rated comedy reviews in London, alongside the strongest sentiment in audience reviews. Add iconic venues like The Comedy Store and Soho Theatre, and comedy greats like Noel Fielding, Matt Lucas, and Jack Whitehall, and it's easy to see why Westminster takes the crown.
2. Camden
Hot on its heels is Camden, where grassroots clubs and late-night venues are giving Londoners plenty to smile about. Camden earned its spot with a strong mix of small clubs and local talent. From the Camden Comedy Club to Dingwalls, its venues are packed with personality and homegrown humour.
Not to mention top audience feedback and demand, with the borough boasting over 12,000 5-star reviews and 27,000 monthly searches.
Our recent survey also found that one in three Brits believe Camden has the best comedy scene in London, proving just how strong its reputation still is.
It’s also home to legends like Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross, and Catherine Tate, and with both Fry and Ross appearing on The Celebrity Traitors this year, Camden’s still very much where the big dogs of comedy come to play. Whether you’re faithful to traditional humour or just not that bothered, Camden’s sharp wit and charm continue to set the standard for London comedy.
3. Hammersmith & Fulham
Taking third place is Hammersmith & Fulham. The borough’s combination of iconic stages like Eventim Apollo and lively pub circuits helped it rank highly for both venue ratings (review sentiment score of 93+) and audience loyalty (10,410 monthly searches).
Additionally, the hilarious Richard Ayoade is a product of this borough, his brilliantly deadpan humour mirrors the area’s understated yet intelligent comedic edge.
4. Hackney
Hackney topped the charts for search popularity, with 71,340 monthly searches, proving that east Londoners can’t get enough of their warehouse venues, open mic nights, and community-led comedy events. Venues like Hackney Empire and Moth Club have redefined the borough’s entertainment scene, while local legend, and fellow Celebrity Traitor cast member Tameka Empson embodies Hackney’s unique mix of wit, warmth, and authenticity.
5. Tower Hamlets
Rounding out the top five is Tower Hamlets, where intimate, character-filled venues and alternative comedy nights are winning over local crowds. The borough boasts 45,370 monthly searches and a review sentiment score of 93.8, proving its growing comedy reputation.
With its blend of historic charm and modern energy, it’s a hidden gem for those seeking a laugh away from the West End spotlight. It’s also the birthplace of Micky Flanagan, whose cheeky, observational humour captures the essence of everyday London life.
6. Wandsworth
With the highest review sentiment (95.2), Wandsworth’s comedy scene might be more low-key than other inner boroughs, but it’s fast becoming one of London’s best-kept secrets. Riverside pubs and intimate venues host regular open-mic nights and stand-up showcases, drawing locals who prefer laughter over late-night chaos.
7. Islington
Taking seventh place is Islington, a north London favourite with over 44,000 monthly searches. Home to venues like Union Chapel and Angel Comedy at The Bill Murray, it’s known for nurturing rising talent and balancing established and up-and-coming acts.
Local-born comedian Kathy Burke perfectly embodies Islington’s no-nonsense humour and down-to-earth charm.
8. Southwark
In eighth place, Southwark delivers laughter with a side of culture. The borough’s blend of theatre, art, and riverside nightlife makes it a hotspot for creativity, from intimate comedy nights near Borough Market to showcases along the South Bank. With a review sentiment of 89, it’s a failsafe option for a good belly laugh.
It’s also the birthplace of Charlie Chaplin, one of the world’s most celebrated comedians, a fitting legacy for a borough still inspiring laughter over a century later.
9. Greenwich
Greenwich attracts 68,590 monthly searches. With historic pubs and quirky performance spaces, it offers heritage and humour in equal measure. Comedy nights at favourites like Up the Creek and The Mitre have built loyal followings, offering everything from seasoned headliners to experimental acts.
10. Lewisham
Rounding out the top 10 is Lewisham, a borough bursting with personality and local pride. With a review sentiment score of 83.7, it proves that community-led venues and lively pub circuits are enough to keep Londoners happy.
Home to Seann Walsh. Lewisham’s quick-witted, relatable humour captures everyday London life in all its chaos and charm.
Lambeth and Kensington & Chelsea complete the top 12, showing how laughter spans both sides of the Thames.

Where Londoners are searching for a laugh

From neighbourhood pubs to intimate theatres, these areas are proving that you don’t have to travel far for a good laugh, the best comedy might be right around the corner.
A round of applause for London living
At Barratt London, we love discovering what makes each part of the city unique, from comedy clubs to community cafés. Our Funniest Boroughs study is part of our ongoing look at how Londoners live, laugh, and connect in the neighbourhoods they call home.
As a developer rooted in the capital, Barratt London champions the lifestyle, culture and creativity that make each neighbourhood so distinctive, because finding a new home in London isn’t just about where you live, but how you live.
Methodology
Barratt London analysed comedy venues across all London boroughs using Google Maps API data, including average ratings, five-star reviews, and audience feedback. Reviews were processed through Python sentiment analysis to assess audience positivity, with Google search volumes also factored in. A weighted ranking (80–100) combining sentiment, venue quality, and popularity was then used to reveal the funniest boroughs in London.
Barratt London surveyed 500 Brits about their perception of London's comedy scene in October 2025.
