From family fun to lovely coastal walks, the South East is a diverse region of the UK. Encompassing the seaside town of Brighton, historic Oxford and the harbour cities of Southampton and Portsmouth, the South East includes a total of seven English counties surrounding Greater London. The South East is served by major roads and motorways, a great rail network and the busiest airports in the UK. The M1 runs from London through Buckinghamshire and north as far as Leeds. The M4 runs through Buckinghamshire and Berkshire from London to West Wales, and the M40 runs north through Oxfordshire. Other motorways include the M2, M20, M23, M3, M27 and parts of the M25; the London ring road.
There are a large number of railway routes through the South East including the Great Western Main Line, the South Eastern Main Line, the West Coast Main Line and the North Downs Line. The High Speed 1 route goes through Kent to the Channel Tunnel, and the Chiltern Main Line provides a popular commuter route between Birmingham and London.
A train journey from Southampton to London takes one hour and 20 minutes. Brighton to London by train takes under an hour and Reading to London is less than 30 minutes.
The South East’s largest airport is Gatwick, and Heathrow Airport in Greater London also serves the region. Ferry services run from Dover and Folkestone to Calais.
