Things to see and do in Edinburgh
There are several things synonymous with Edinburgh, not least the city’s stunning castle. Perched atop Castle Hill in the heart of the Old Town, the historic fortification has many centuries of tales to discover within its walls, while there are spectacular views to enjoy out over the city too.
Another iconic Edinburgh pastime is the annual Fringe festival, which overlaps with the Edinburgh International Festival. The city’s stunning natural setting in the shadow of extinct volcano Arthur’s Seat also provides you with great hikes, while other top attractions include the National Museum of Scotland, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, St Giles’ Cathedral and the Scottish National Gallery.
Education
Edinburgh’s excellent selection of state and private schools makes it extremely popular with families. Boroughmuir High School in the Fountainbridge area of south central Edinburgh is one of the city’s top performing secondary schools, and has been rated as very good for raising attainment and achievement by Education Scotland.
For younger children, Sciennes Primary School just off the Meadows near Holyrood Park is Edinburgh’s largest primary school. It still offers excellent teaching though and ranks as one of the city’s top primaries, with many students moving on to the prestigious James Gillespie’s High School.
Edinburgh transport links
With its two main train stations - Haymarket and Waverley - found in the heart of the city centre, Edinburgh is well connected to the rest of Scotland and the UK by rail. If you have your eye on destinations further afield, the city boasts a major international airport a few miles out of town.
The city centre meanwhile is easy to explore on foot, although there are plenty of buses and taxis you can use to get around, as well as a tram service that links the airport to the New Town area. If you have a car, you can pick up the A1 to head east towards the coast, while the M9 and M8 motorways are to the west of the centre, the latter of which you can use to drive to Glasgow in around an hour.
The Edinburgh property scene
Whether you’re a first-time buyer, investor or after a comfortable family home, Edinburgh has a thriving property market. From stylish 2 and 3 bedroom apartments in beachside suburb Portobello to large and elegant family homes off Gilmerton Station Road surrounded by plenty of greenery, you can also find modern 3 and 4 bed homes in Musselburgh, an area popular for its high rental yields.
