  • Located in the north east of Scotland, Aberdeenshire is a beautiful and scenic area of the country that encompasses a whole host of towns and villages including Ellon, Inverurie and Newmachar.  The boundaries of Aberdeenshire stretch all the way along the north and east coasts, making it an attractive location for people of all ages. From the wild Cairngorms and rugged coast to striking castles and family-friendly museums, residents of Aberdeenshire have plenty to see and do in the local area, while also benefiting from good education establishments and great transport links. 

  • There is a wide range of areas across Aberdeenshire, each with their own unique character. The Royal Deeside area includes the towns of Braemar, Balmoral and Ballater, with part also being within the picturesque Cairngorms National Park which boasts 24 munros (mountains over 3,000 feet) -  a dream for hill walkers and ramblers.   

    In the south of Aberdeenshire, Stonehaven is an idyllic coastal town with an impressive harbour.  To the north are the seaside towns of Fraserburgh, the biggest shellfish port in Europe, and Peterhead, the largest settlement in Aberdeenshire and referred to by locals as The Blue Toon due to its fishing heritage. Turriff is a small town inland that boasts a historic market square and is home of the Turriff Agricultural show, the largest annual event in Aberdeenshire.

    The quaint town of Ellon sits alongside the River Ythan north of Aberdeen and is surrounded by idyllic scenery. Filled with history, Ellon is home to attractions including Haddo House and Pitmedden Gardens, both of which are National Trust sites. The town has excellent transport links and is a great location for commuters with Aberdeen being only a half hour drive away.

    Located in the centre of Aberdeenshire, Inverurie sits between the River Don and the River Ury and is a thriving market town. Popular with commuters to Aberdeen, it’s been recently known as one of the fastest growing towns in Britain with many relocating there from the city.  Both residents and visitors enjoy the monthly Farmer’s Market and hiking in the countryside that surrounds the town, especially the imposing Bennachie.

    The village of Newmacher is only 10 miles north-west of Aberdeen. Boasting all the amenities residents could need, its rural location and the Newmachar Golf Club make it the perfect location for those who enjoy a quieter pace of life while still being within easy reach of the city.

    While there are no motorways in Aberdeenshire, there are a number of dual carriageways including the A9 and A90, along with smaller A and B roads, connecting the local towns, villages and city. The main city of Aberdeen connects residents to both Edinburgh and Glasgow, the journey by car taking two and a half and three hours respectively. To get to London, a car journey takes at least 9 hours so it’s best to fly from Aberdeen Airport which takes just 1 hour 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can take the Caledonian Sleeper train from Aberdeen, which takes 10 hours overnight.

    Public transport in Aberdeenshire is varied and includes many bus services from outer towns and villages to Aberdeen, as well as multiple train services. The train from Inverurie to Aberdeen takes just under half an hour, and the city station then has connecting services to many major UK stations.

    For international travel, Aberdeen International Airport in Dyce is easily accessible from many Aberdeenshire towns with flights to destinations across the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. 

  • Aberdeenshire is full of fascinating sights just waiting to be explored, from wild natural landscapes to kid-friendly days out and everything in between. The region is home to a number of historical sites including Iron Age hill forts, stone circles and Neolithic sites, while local museums include Arbuthnot Museum, Aberdeenshire Farming Museum and the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses.

    There are also many castles in this area of Scotland, with Balmoral Castle, the British royal family’s Scottish home, being the most famous. Others include Crathes Castle, Corgarff Castle, Muchalls Castle and Dunnottar Castle.

    There is something for everyone to do in Aberdeenshire, from sporting enthusiasts and adventure seekers to those who simply like relaxing walks in the countryside. The Cairngorms National Park covers a vast area with mountains and forests to explore, while the RSPB Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve is the place for wildlife lovers to spot clifftop colonies of birds. Weekends at the seaside are easy to enjoy at Hackley Bay or Balmedie beach, and there’s a huge variety of local cafes, restaurants and shops across the whole region.

    With Aberdeen close-by, the city is perfect for day trips. As well as attractions including the Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Aberdeen Science Centre and Duthie Park and Winter Gardens, it’s also a great place for shopping or simply relaxing in the local cafes.
