Things to see and do

Newmarket is well-known for its horse racing heritage, and today is home to the National Horse Racing Museum as well as the town’s two race courses, The July Course and The Rowley Mile. One of the most famous events is The July Cup, while the venue also hosts a number of other events and festivals throughout the year.

There are lots of historic sights close to Newmarket, including Burwell Museum, Devil’s Dyke and Denny Abbey Farmland Museum. If you want a day out in the city, Cambridge is home to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge Museum of Technology, the University Botanic Gardens and the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre.

If you need to stretch your legs in the great outdoors, Wicken Fen, Wandlebury Country Park and Milton Country Park are all only a short drive away from the town, while other places of interest include Linton Zoo and Ely Cathedral.

Education

For families with school-age children, your new home in Newmarket is close to the ‘outstanding’ Kettlefields Primary School and Bottisham Village College, while Paddocks Primary School, Houldsworth Valley Primary School and St Louis Roman Catholic Academy are rated ‘good’.

If you have older children who want to study for a degree, the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin are both within commuting distance, offering a wide range of academic and vocational courses.

Getting to Newmarket

Newmarket is very well-connected by road and rail, ideal for commuters travelling to Cambridge, London and beyond. The town is 20 minutes from Cambridge by train or 25 minutes by car, while the journey from Bury St Edmunds takes 25 minutes by car.

The journey from Ipswich takes 45 minutes by car or one hour by train, while the drive from Peterborough and Norwich takes one hour depending on traffic. To get to London, the train journey takes one hour 20 minutes from Newmarket to King’s Cross, changing once in Cambridge.

If you’re going on a business trip abroad or jetting off on holiday, London Stansted Airport is less than 40 minutes from Newmarket by car. If you prefer to save yourself the hassle of airport parking, you can take the train to the airport travelling via Cambridge.
