Things to see and do in Prestonpans

Life really is a beach in Prestonpans, thanks to the town’s pretty stretch of Scottish shoreline along the Firth of Forth. There’s lots of history to uncover in the local area too, with Prestonpans the site of a famous battle back in 1745. You can learn more about this at one of the local museums, as well as the area’s mining heritage.

Whether you’re visiting one of the local castles, both along the coast and inland, or exploring Gosford Sands and Aberlady Bay Local Nature Reserve, there’s also a great selection of golf courses set into the beautiful scenery. From Aberlady Bay and Vogrie Country Park to Scotch distilleries, lots of neighbouring beaches in places like Portobello and spectacular Lowlands landscapes to the south, Prestonpans also has all of Edinburgh’s cultural offerings right on its doorstep.

Education

The choice of schools in town for younger kids includes Prestonpans Infant and Nursery School and Prestonpans Primary. There’s also St Gabriels if you’re looking for a Roman Catholic primary school. The local secondary is Preston Lodge High School which is along Park View in the east of town.

Prestonpans transport links

Prestonpans train station is on the town’s southern edge, just off Gardiner Terrace. You can catch trains into Edinburgh from here which take little more than 10 minutes, making the town perfect for commuting to the Scottish capital. The A1 road also passes close to town, which you can use to drive to Edinburgh in around 20 minutes. It’s another 10 minutes on to the airport, while Glasgow is an hour’s drive away along the M8.

The Prestonpans property scene

House prices in Prestonpans are significantly lower than the average across the Edinburgh and Lothian region. With everything from large detached homes on the edge of town to semi-detached villas and characterful terraces, you can also find stunning 3, 4 and 5 bedroom new properties along Rowberry Walk in the west of town, right next to Royal Musselburgh Golf Club.
