Things to see and do
With Hessle’s excellent location, just outside Hull city centre, you’ll find a variety of child-friendly activities, offering fun for all the family. Enjoy a day out at the interactive dinosaur museum Dinostar, head down into the Deep to learn all about the sea or go Junior Quad Bike driving. If something a little more cultural takes your fancy you can visit one of the area’s many museums including Hull Maritime Museum, Baysgarth House Museum, or Streetlife Museum of Transport.
The Humber Bridge Country Park is in Hessle and is the perfect place to spend a day in the great outdoors. The 48-acre wood has open meadows (home to wild flowers and butterflies) and a wildlife pond and is in the site of a former chalk quarry; the white cliffs that surround it is why you’ll hear locals refer to it as Little Switzerland.
Other places of interest in the local area include the Humber Bridge, Hull Marina and St. Peter’s Church.
For families with school-age children, it’s good to know there are several outstanding schools in Hessle and the surrounding area. The list includes Springhead Primary School, Eastfield Primary School, Swanland Primary School, Ganton Secondary School and Sirius Academy West.
If you or your older children are thinking about studying for a degree, the University of Hull is close by and can be reached in under an hour by bus.
Getting to Hessle
Whether you’re commuting into nearby Hull or travelling to see family and friends, you’ll be pleased with the transport options close to your new home in Hessle. The centre of Hull is just a 17-minute drive via the A63 and a 20-minute bus journey. Both Leeds and York are just over an hours’ drive via the M62 and A63 respectively, with Grimsby and Scunthorpe just over half an hour away.
The town is well served by Hessle Railway Station, providing direct services to Hull every hour with a journey time of around ten minutes. The train journey to Leeds will take you just under an hour and a half with one change at Brough, with Sheffield 60 minutes and one change in Doncaster away.
When the time comes to enjoy a well-earned rest, Hessle is just a 20-minute drive from Humberside Airport.
