From lovely countryside to cultural sights and family fun, Bedford is a lively county town with a scenic riverside location on the River Great Ouse. With good transport links to nearby towns and cities including London, new houses in Bedford are great for commuters and families.
There are two train stations in the town with the busiest being Bedford train station, the northern terminus of the Thameslink with National Rail services into London St Pancras, and through services to Gatwick and Brighton. The station is located on the Midland Main Line from Nottingham to London. The smaller of the two, Bedford St Johns, is on the Marston Vale Line running to Bletchley. Road links are provided by A roads including the A6 and A421, with the M1 just a short drive away.
A journey from Bedford to London takes around 50 minutes by train or an hour and 45 minutes by car depending on traffic. Cambridge can be reached in 45 minutes by car, while Northampton is 40 minutes away and Milton Keynes is 25 minutes away. Birmingham is a one hour and 30 minute drive via the M1 and M6.
For international travel, London Luton Airport is 40 minutes away by car.

Addison Howard Park, Embankment Gardens, Russell Park and Bedford Park provide open parkland, children’s play areas, sports facilities and walking routes. Whereas Priory Country Park offers 360 acres of land to explore spanning lakes, woodlands and meadows. Marston Vale Millennium Country Park, Marston Vale Forest Centre and Harrold Odell Country Park are all just a short drive away.
Historic sites in the local area include Bromham Mill, The Roman Sandy and Woburn Abbey and Gardens. John Bunyan Museum explores the author’s life alongside Bedford’s local history.
There are plenty of opportunities to get active in the local area, with sports facilities including Robinson Pool, Oasis Beach Pool, The Bunyan Sports Centre, Box End Park and The Stables Equestrian Centre. Golf enthusiasts can play a round at Bedfordshire Golf Club, The Bedford Golf Club or Bedford and County Golf Club.
Family days out include Summerfield Miniature Railways, Birds of Prey Centre, Thurleigh Farm Centre and Woburn Safari Park. For theatrical entertainment, the town is home to The Quarry Theatre at St Luke’s, The Place and Bedford Corn Exchange.
There are a number of excellent schools in Bedford, with ‘Outstanding’ schools including Priory Lower School, St John’s School, St John Rigby Catholic Primary School, Castle Lower School and St Thomas More Catholic School. Independent schools include Bedford School, Bedford Modern School and Bedford Girls’ School, while higher education is provided by The University of Bedfordshire campus.
