As a rural area, there are lots of picturesque spots to explore in Northumberland, perfect if you enjoy hiking and cycling in the great outdoors. Northumberland National Park, Kielder Forest Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all popular places to visit, while the Northumbrian Coast Path takes you on a walk by the sea.
There are a number of historic sites to explore in Northumberland, including Hadrian’s Wall, Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne Castle and Dunstanburgh Castle. Hexham Abbey has an Anglo-Saxon crypt, a Roman tomb and a 7th century stone stool, while Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum explores the local musical heritage.
Other places of interest in Northumberland include The Alnwick Garden, Cragside, Warkworth Castle and Hexham Old Gaol. Kids will love spotting wildlife on boat trips to Farne Islands, while golf fans can practice their swing at Bamburgh Castle Golf Club and Rothbury Golf Club.
Newcastle is just south of Northumberland, where attractions in the city range from music concerts at the Metro Radio Arena, shopping at intu Eldon Square and getting culture at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.
If you’re moving to the area with children, it’s good to know there are a number of outstanding schools nearby including Chollerton Church of England Aided First School, Beaufront First School, The Sele First School and Hipsburn Primary School.
For older children who want to study for a degree, Newcastle is home to Northumbria University and Newcastle University.
Getting to Northumberland
Northumberland is just north of Newcastle, and there are good transport links into the city and beyond. The journey from the city to Hexham takes just 30 minutes by car or 40 minutes by train, while the journey to Berwick-upon-Tweed takes one hour 15 minutes by car or just 45 minutes on the fast rail service.
When it’s time to go on holiday, Newcastle International Airport is only a 35-minute drive from Hexham and 40 minutes from Alnwick.
