Things to see and do
Banbury is well-known for its cross, which features in the nursery rhyme ‘Ride a Cock Horse’. Although the original no longer exists, you can see the 19th-century version in the town. Other historic places of interest include Banbury Museum, which has both temporary and permanent exhibitions, while Broughton Castle and Tooley’s Boathouse are also worth a visit.
For an afternoon out, Upton House is an impressive National Trust property just a short drive north-west of the town centre, while there are guided tours of Sulgrave Manor, which was built by ancestors of former US president George Washington.
If you’re moving to the area with young children, they’ll enjoy spending time at People’s Park exploring the rose garden, watching the birds in the aviary and getting energetic at the playground. Other attractions nearby include Bicester Village outlet shopping mall and Spiceball Country Park.
For families with school-age children, there are a number of good schools in the local area including Queensway School, Harriers Banbury Academy, Dashwood Banbury Academy and North Oxfordshire Academy. If you have older children, there is a campus of Oxford and Cherwell Valley College in Banbury, while the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University are within commuting distance too.
Getting to Banbury
Banbury is located next to the M40 and has its own railway station with direct trains to London and beyond. To get to Banbury from Oxford, the journey takes 40 minutes by car or under 20 minutes by train. Birmingham is 50 minutes away by car or 45 minutes by train, while Leamington Spa can be reached in 30 minutes by car or 15 minutes by train. Milton Keynes and Northampton are both 45 minutes away.
If you’re commuting into London, the Chiltern Railways service takes around one hour from Banbury Station to Marylebone Station.
For holidays and business trips, you can get to Birmingham Airport in just 40 minutes from Banbury by car, or 40 minutes by direct train - perfect if you want to avoid airport parking charges.
