If you’re moving to the town with children, Halstead and the surrounding area is home to lots of great family-friendly attractions including Gosfield Lake Resort, Hedingham Castle and Colne Valley Railway. Braintree Swimming Centre, Boydells Dairy Farm and the East Anglian Railway Museum are all nearby, ideal for kid-friendly days out.

Mark Hall Gardens and Arboretum is only a short drive away from Halstead, while Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the beaches along the east coast are also nearby.

Other places of interest in or near the town include Kentwell Hall and Gardens, Coggeshall Grange Barn, The Cressing Temple Barns and the Empire Theatre.

Education

For families with school-age children, Stisted Church of England Primary Academy, Bures Church of England Primary School, Lyons Hall School and Maltings Academy are rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, while independent education is offered at Gosfield School and Felsted School.

If your older children want to study for a degree without venturing too far from home, the University of Essex is based nearby in Colchester, while Anglia Ruskin University is in Chelmsford and University Campus Suffolk is in Ipswich.

Getting to Halstead

It’s easy to get to Halstead by car, with the journey from Braintree taking around 15 minutes, and the drive from Chelmsford taking 35 minutes. The journey from Ipswich takes around 40 minutes, while Cambridge is a 50-minute drive from the town.

Although there’s no train station in Halstead, rail services run from both Chelmsford and Witham. The train journey from London to Chelmsford takes just 35 minutes, while the car journey from the capital to Halstead takes around one hour 20 minutes depending on traffic.

If you’re going on holiday, London Stansted is only a 30-minute drive away, so your trips abroad will get off to an easy and hassle-free start.
