Things to see and do

If you love discovering local history, there are lots of great attractions in the city including Winchester Cathedral and Winchester Castle, where you’ll find Arthur’s Round Table. Wolvesey Castle and the Old Minster are also popular, while museums include the Gurkha Museum, the Royal Green Jackets Museum and Westgate Museum.

For adventures in the great outdoors, the South Downs National Park is right on your doorstep, while other green spaces to explore include Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Hinton Ampner House and Garden, and Twyford Down. There are a number of self-guided walks through the town, including the Jane Austen Trail and Winchester Tudor Trail.

If you like to buy fresh, locally-grown produce, you can shop at Winchester Farmers’ Market. Other places of interest in the city include Winchester Discovery Centre and the Theatre Royal, while kids will love visiting Marwell Wildlife just a short drive away. For golf fans, there are plenty of courses to choose from including Royal Winchester Golf Club and Hockley Golf Course.

Education

For families moving to the area, it’s good to know that Winchester is home to a number of excellent schools. St Bede Church of England Primary School, St Faith’s Church of England Primary School, King’s School and St Peter’s Catholic School are all rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, while The Pilgrims School and St Swithun’s School are both independent.

If you or your children are thinking about studying for a degree or taking a vocational course, Winchester College and the University of Winchester are both located in the city.

Getting to Winchester

If you’re commuting to work or visiting family and friends, there are good transport links by both road and rail from your new home in Winchester. The train station has regular services to London, Southampton and Portsmouth, while the M3 is close by.

Winchester is one hour 10 minutes away from London by train and one hour 30 minutes by car. The journey from Southampton takes just 15 minutes by train and 20 minutes by car, while the drive from Portsmouth takes 30 minutes, or 40 minutes by train.

When you’re going on holiday, the journey from Winchester to Southampton Airport takes just 15 minutes by car or 10 minutes by train, so your adventures abroad will get off to a quick and easy start.
