Whitby is a lovely seaside and port town in North Yorkshire, found on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. The town’s remote location, historic sights and coastal scenery make new homes in Whitby ideal for all.
Whitby is located just off the A171 running north to Middlesbrough and south to Scarborough. The town’s train station, on the Esk Valley Line, runs a National Rail service to Middlesbrough.
The closest major town is Scarborough, a 35 minute journey away by car. Middlesbrough is 50 minutes away by car or around an hour and 30 minutes by train, while York can be reached by car in an hour and 15 minutes, Newcastle in one hour and 30 minutes, Leeds in an hour and 40 minutes and Hull in one hour and 45 minutes.
The nearest airport is Durham Tees Valley Airport, a one hour drive away.
Places of interest
As a lovely coastal town, Whitby is popular for its beaches, scenery and fishing port. Whitby Beach can be accessed from the town, while other local beaches include Tate Hill Beach, Upgang Beach, Sandsend Beach and Runswick Bay. The town has two historic piers, the East Pier and West Pier.
There are a number of historic attractions in the local area, including Whitby Abbey - an English Heritage site - home to the cliff top remains that inspired the famous gothic tale, Dracula. The National Trust’s Old Coastguard Station is a short drive away, while local museums include the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Whitby Museum and Pannett Art Gallery, Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum and the Museum of Victorian Science.
Located on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in the local area. The North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast, stretching across 36 miles, begins just north of Whitby.
Whitby Pavilion provides entertainment including performing arts, music and film, while other places of interest in the town include Pannett Park, Whitby Lighthouse, the Church of Saint Mary and Whitby’s 199 steps. The North York Moors Railway is a popular heritage line with steam engines running through Whitby, Grosmont, Goathland, Newtondale Halt, Levisham and Pickering.
Schools and colleges in the town include Whitby Community College, Caedmon College Whitby, Stakesby Community Primary School, West Cliff Primary School and St Hilda’s Roman Catholic Primary School.
