Things to see and do in Leicester
A compact city centre means Leicester is ideal for exploring on foot, as you visit landmarks such as the city’s cathedral, castle and Guildhall. Stroll around Abbey Park’s boating lake on your way to the historic abbey, which is just around the corner from the fascinating National Space Museum.
Leicester’s 700-year-old market opposite Town Hall Square’s fountain is open six days a week, while there are lots of wide open natural spaces to enjoy on the outskirts of town, including Watermead Country Park and Bradgate Park.
Education
If you have children then you’ll be pleased to know there are some excellent schools in Leicester. Sparkenhoe Community Primary School is right on the edge of the city centre and outstanding according to Ofsted, while Parks Primary School in the New Parks area has been given the same rating.
When it comes to secondary schools, Melton Road’s mixed-sex Rushey Mead Academy is a top performer and like the Beauchamp College in Oadby is rated as outstanding by Ofsted. For the latter, being south east of the city centre in a spot like Wigston will put you in the appropriate catchment area.
Leicester transport links
Part of the East Midlands region, Leicester has excellent transport links for getting around the area and making your way to other parts of the country. The M1 motorway passes to the west of the city centre, while a number of different train routes serve the main central station on London Road.
For holidays abroad, East Midlands Airport is less than 20 miles away, which is a journey you can do in less than half an hour in the car. You can also catch a direct train to the airport, as well as London Luton and London Stansted, while Leicester has a comprehensive bus network for getting around the city.

There are comfortable 4 bedroom family homes on Newton Lane in Wigston, a variety of lakeside properties ranging from 1 to 4 beds in Lubbesthorpe on the outskirts of town, and modern 2 and 3 bed semi and detached homes on Somerset Avenue close to the city centre.
