Houghton-le-Spring is located on the A692 which connects the town to Sunderland, and just a short distance east of the A1(M). The town doesn’t have a train station, but there are a number of regular bus services providing public transport to places nearby.
Sunderland is 15 minutes away from Houghton-le-Spring by car, Durham can be reached in just less than 15 minutes, and Newcastle is a 20 minute drive away depending on traffic. Edinburgh is 2 hours 30 minutes away, while the drive to London takes at least 4 hours 30 minutes. For rail trips to the capital, the train from Newcastle takes just 2 hours 50 minutes to King’s Cross. There are also direct trains to London from Durham.
For international travel, Durham Tees Valley Airport is 35 minutes away by car while Newcastle International Airport can be reached in just 30 minutes via the A1.
