Things to see and do
If you enjoy shopping, Buckingham is full of independent stores and boutiques along with cafes and restaurants, as well as the pedestrianised Cornwall Place retail parade. The town’s market is more than six centuries old and continues to this day on a Tuesday and Saturday. There’s also a community cinema, known as The Film Place, where you can see both independent and blockbuster films.
When it comes to discovering local history and culture, there are lots of places to explore in Buckingham including the 15th Buckingham Chantry Chapel, which is now a National Trust-owned bookshop. The Buckingham Old Gaol Museum is also popular, and you can see some of the original cells dating back to the 18th century.
If you’ve got children, there are lots of family-friendly attractions close to Buckingham including Towcester Museum and Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, where you can see steam trains and a miniature railway. Rookery Open Farm in Towcester, The Canal Museum in Stoke Bruerne, Waddesdon Manor near Aylesbury and Stowe Landscape Gardens are all just a short drive away.
Education
For families with school-age children, there are a number of ‘outstanding’ schools in Buckingham, as rated by Ofsted, including Bourton Meadow Academy, Buckingham Primary School, Thornborough Infant School and Royal Latin School.
There are also a number of independent schools in the local area including Stowe School, Akeley Wood Junior School, Silverstone UTC and Beachborough School. For further education, Thornton College and Bicester Technology Studio are both within driving distance, while The University of Buckingham provides degree-level courses.
Getting to Buckingham
Buckingham is located close to the A421 just a short drive from the M40 motorway, so there are good links by road if you’re commuting to neighbouring towns and cities. Although there’s no train station in the town, the stations at Wolverton, Bicester Town, Bicester North and Milton Keynes Central are all nearby.
The journey from Aylesbury to Buckingham takes 30 minutes by car travelling via the A413, while Milton Keynes is just 20 minutes away via the A422 and A5. The drive to London takes around one hour 45 minutes, but the train from Milton Keynes Central Station takes just 30 minutes to reach London Euston.
If you’re going abroad, the drive to London Heathrow airport takes around one hour 5 minutes, while London Luton is just 50 minutes away travelling via the A421 and M1.
