Things to see and do

If you love exploring the great outdoors, there are lots of places to go on walks and cycling rides close to your new home in Hawkwell including Hockley Woods, Belfairs Nature Reserve, Leigh-on-Sea Beach and Rayleigh Mount. Historic sites nearby include Hadleigh Castle and Rayleigh Windmill,  while Prittlewell Priory, Central Museum and Southend Planetarium are ideal for educational days out.

For families moving to the area, Southend Pier, Marsh Farm Animal Adventure Park and Southend Cliff Lift are popular with kids of all ages. If you’re a sports fan, you can play golf at Rochford Hundred Golf Club, get your skates on at Rollacity in Rochford, and try out watersports at Southend Marine Activities Centre.

Education

If you’re moving to Hawkwell school-age children, there are a number of excellent schools in the local area, including The Sweyne Park School which is rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. For older children and adults considering taking a degree, the University of Essex and Anglia Ruskin University are both within commuting distance.

Getting to Hawkwell

Whether you’re commuting for work or taking a trip to see friends and family, it’s easy to travel to and from Hawkwell by car. While there’s no train in the village, there are regular rail services to London and beyond from neighbouring Hockley, a five minute drive away.

To get to Hawkwell, the journey by car takes 10 minutes from Southend and 30 minutes from Chelmsford. From central London, the car journey takes around one hour 10 minutes depending on traffic, while the train from Liverpool Street to Hockley takes just 45 minutes.

If you’re going on holiday, London Stansted Airport is a 50 minute drive from Hawkwell, while London Gatwick can be reached in one hour 10 minutes. Heathrow and Luton Airports are also within easy reach, so there’s plenty of choice when you’re going abroad.
