Things to see and do

Calne is close to a number of impressive attractions, including nature reserves, children’s farms and historic sites. At Bowood House and Gardens you can explore the parkland, see the exhibits in the manor house itself, or watch while the kids play at the adventure playground. Atwell Wilson Motor Museum is also nearby, where you can see an impressive collection of vehicles dating from the 1920s onwards.

There are lots of places to enjoy a breath of fresh air just a short drive away from Calne, including Drews Pond Wood Local Nature Reserve where you can walk through the trees and spot wildlife on the pond. The North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is close by, while golf fans will enjoy a leisurely round at North Wilts Golf Club.

When you want to do some shopping, Chippenham is close to Calne, where you can find plenty of shops and cafes along with Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre. Places of historical interest nearby include Avebury Stone Circle, Silbury Hill and the Alexander Keiller Museum.


If you’re moving to the area with your family, it’s good to know that there are a number of excellent schools in Calne. Saint Edmund’s Roman Catholic Primary School, Derry Hill Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School and Malmesbury School are all rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, while independent schools include St Mary’s School, St Margaret’s School, Stonar School, Grittleton House School and Dauntsey’s School.

For higher education, Wiltshire College in Chippenham provides degree courses, while the top-rated University of Bath and Bath Spa University are only a short drive away.

Getting to Calne

Calne is on the A4 and just a short distance away from junction 16 and 17 of the M4. The journey from Calne to Chippenham takes 15 minutes by car or 20 minutes by bus, while Marlborough can be reached in 25 minutes, Swindon in 35 minutes, Bath in 45 minutes and Bristol in 55 minutes.

Although Calne doesn’t have its own train station, Chippenham station is close by. To get to London by public transport, the bus and train takes around one hour 50 minutes. When it’s holiday time, Bristol Airport is only one hour 15 minutes away by car, and London Heathrow can be reached in one hour 25 minutes via the M4.
