Things to see and do in Ellesmere Port
The large industrial town and port developed from a group of villages with the completion of the Manchester Ship Canal in the 19th century. The Cheshire town’s industrial roots remain, with a Vauxhall Motors assembly plant and the Stanlow Oil Refinery currently based here. Today, those buying a new home in Ellesmere Port can visit the National Waterways Museum at the town’s former docks, and experience life on the canals for themselves.
For underwater discovery, the Blue Planet Aquarium is one Ellesmere Port’s most popular attractions. In this award-winning water world, you’ll find Europe’s largest collection of Sharks, a 70 metre underwater tunnel, amphibians, a swamp and a coral cave.
Near to the aquarium, keen shoppers can pick up a bargain at the UK’s largest Designer Outlet. Cheshire Oaks contains over 145 retail stores, restaurants and cafés featuring a wide range of brands to suit a variety of tastes. The Coliseum Leisure Park is also close by with a cinema, bowling alley and restaurants on site. In the centre of Ellesmere Port, the Port Arcades Shopping Centre is where you’ll find the usual high street brands. In contrast to well-known names, Ellesmere Port Market is the place locals go for an eclectic mix of stalls offering food, handmade goods, electronics and fashion to name a few. Open six days a week, a theme market visits once a quarter.
Less than five miles away from the town centre, Chester Zoo is one of the region’s most popular days out. Around 11,000 animals can be visited at the 110 acre zoo with plenty of activities also on offer, including a monorail, a waterbus and a wooden play park area.

Ellesmere Port sits at the interchange of the M56 and M53 motorways and can be reached by road to major towns and cities in the North West – including Chester (9m), Liverpool (14m) and Manchester (40m approximately).
The town’s railway station offers frequent services to Liverpool and Chester for onward connections all over the country. Regular local bus services also run from Ellesmere Port around the region.
Well placed for air travel, Ellesmere Port is 24 miles from Liverpool John Lennon Airport with Manchester and Blackpool airports further afield.
