Encompassing the towns of Livingston, Bathgate, Linlithgow and Broxburn, West Lothian is a region of Scotland located to the west of Edinburgh. The M8 motorway runs right through West Lothian, providing easy access to both Edinburgh and Glasgow. There are a number of train stations dotted throughout the region, for quick travel routes within West Lothian and beyond.
Travelling within the region, a drive from Livingston to Whitburn takes just 15 minutes, while Linlithgow is also 15 minutes away from West Lothian’s largest town. To get to Edinburgh, the train from Livingston takes 20 minutes while the car journey takes around 30 minutes. Linlithgow is 40 minutes away from the Scottish capital by car, or 30 minutes by train.
For international travel, Edinburgh Airport is just 15 minutes away from Livingston, offering both domestic and international flights.

Historic sites in the local area include the 15th century Blackness Castle, Linlithgow Palace where Mary, Queen of Scots was born, and the House of the Binns, a National Trust for Scotland property set in landscaped parkland.
For a taste of the great outdoors, West Lothian borders the Pentland Hills Regional Park where there are lots of hiking and cycling routes just waiting to be explored. Other green spaces in the local area include Beecraigs Country Park, Polkemmet Country Park, Almondell and Calderwood Country Park, and Cairnpapple Hill. Linlithgow Canal is also worth a visit.
Children and wildlife lovers will enjoy a visit to Five Sisters Zoo in West Calder and the Scottish Owl Centre in Whitburn, while the Almond Valley Heritage Centre has a working mill, tractor rides and farm animal.
For a spot of retail therapy, Livingston Designer Outlet is the region’s most popular shopping centre, offering cut-price high street and designer stores all under one roof. Evening entertainment is provided by the Howden Park Centre in Livingston, where you can take part in classes or see a theatrical performance.
Some of the best schools in the area include Winchburgh Primary School in Winchburgh, Murrayfield Primary School in Blackburn, Linlithgow Academy and St Margaret’s Academy in Livingston. West Lothian College provides further education, while the nearest universities are in Edinburgh.
