Things to see and do

If you’re a history buff, there are lots of great attractions close to Dunmow including the Gardens of Easton Lodge, Mountfitchet Castle and the National Trust’s Hatfield Forest. The Flitch Trials take place once every four years, as part of a tradition dating back to the 12th century.

For a breath of fresh air, you can go for a cycle ride at Great Notley Park, or take a walk through Braintree and Bocking Public Gardens nearby. If you want to get active, you can try out a new sport at Great Dunmow Leisure Centre, practice your swing at Bishops Stortford Golf Club and Elsenham Golf Club, or go horse riding at Hallingbury Hall Equestrian Centre and Maple Pollard Riding Centre.


If you have school-age children, it’s good to know there are a number of excellent schools in and around Dunmow. Felsted Primary School, The Hertfordshire and Essex High School and The Bishop’s Stortford High School are all rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, while Walden School and Felsted School offer independent education.

For higher education, you can study for a degree at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford, the University of Essex in Colchester and the prestigious University of Cambridge, all within driving distance of Dunmow. 

Getting to Dunmow

Dunmow is well-connected by car, with the A120 nearby and the M11 only a few miles away. Although there’s no train station in the town, rail services are available from Bishop’s Stortford and Braintree nearby.

The town is a 15 minute drive away from both Braintree and Bishop’s Stortford, while the journey from Chelmsford takes 25 minutes. Travelling by car, Dunmow is 35 minutes from Colchester and 40 minutes from Cambridge, while the journey from London takes one hour by car or 50 minutes from Liverpool Street Station to Bishop’s Stortford by train.

If you’re going on holiday, the journey from Dunmow to London Stansted Airport takes less than 10 minutes, so you can leave the car at home and take a taxi.
