Things to see and do

Hayling Island is best known for its beaches, from the pebbled Eastoke Corner Beach to the popular, sheltered West Beachlands and the cycling-friendly Promenade. If you enjoy coastal walks, the Hayling Billy Trail starts at Havant and takes you along the old train line to Hayling town.

For families, the island has its own amusement park, Funland, where you’ll find a runaway mine train, arcade games, dodgems and more, while Hayling Seaside Railway is also popular with children. In the evening, Station Theatre hosts regular performances by local and touring groups.

If you enjoy getting active, there are lots of chances to take up a new sport on Hayling Island, from kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing, to perfecting your swing at Hayling Golf Club. If you want to get out and about in the great outdoors, there are lots of walking routes through Staunton Country Park and Chichester Harbour AONB, just a short drive away.

When it’s time to get a fix of city life, Portsmouth is nearby where you’ll find the Royal Marines Museum, Spinnaker Tower, the Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth City Museum and Blue Reef Aquarium.


If you’re moving to the area with children, Mill Rythe Junior School is rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, while there are some ‘good’ schools including Mengham Infant School and Mengham Junior School.

Independent schools within commuting distance of Hayling Island include Mayville High School, St John’s College and Portsmouth High School, while higher education is provided at the University of Portsmouth and the University of Chichester just a short drive away.

Getting to Hayling Island

Hayling Island is connected to the mainland by a road bridge, with the journey from Portsmouth taking 20 minutes by car and the journey from Chichester taking around 25 minutes. Hayling Island is 40 minutes away from Southampton, and one hour 45 minutes away from London travelling by car via the A3. To get to the capital by train, the direct service from nearby Havant to London Waterloo takes one hour 15 minutes.

If you’re going abroad, Southampton Airport is 30 minutes away from Hayling Island travelling by car via the M27.
