Things to see and do in East Cowes

Cowes is a historic port with a rich maritime heritage. The eastern part of the town is home to interesting attractions like the Classic Boat Museum Gallery and East Cowes Heritage Centre, and also offers access to the beautiful Osborne Bay. Continuing round the coast you’ll come across Wootton Creek before too long, a tidal estuary which flows into the Solent.

There are so many coastal delights to enjoy around the Isle of Wight, with spectacular spots like Ryde Beach only eight miles away from East Cowes, or 20 minutes in the car. From days building sandcastles with your little ones to walks along the River Medina, you can also look forward to exploring the Hamstead Heritage Coast on the west of the island.

Education

The local primary school in East Cowes is Holy Cross Catholic Primary, while Queensgate Foundation Primary is in the south of town. Both of these schools are rated as good by Ofsted, along with Cowes Primary, Lanesend Primary and Gurnard Primary across the river. Cowes Enterprise College is also the other side of the river, with the all-through independent Priory School another local option close to the centre of East Cowes.

East Cowes transport links

East Cowes is dissected by the A3021, which heads south towards Newport. You can reach the Isle of Wight’s county town in around 15 minutes, while it’s around 25 minutes to get all the way round to Cowes. There’s no bridge across the River Medina, although there is a chain ferry you can use to traverse the water either by car or on foot. You can also catch a ferry from East Cowes across the Solent to Southampton on the south coast of England.
