Things to see and do

Canterbury is best known for its historic sights, from the beautiful Canterbury Cathedral to the impressive Anglo-Saxon World Heritage Site, St Augustine’s Abbey. There are also a number of museums in the town where you can discover more about the region in times gone by, including Canterbury Roman Museum, Canterbury Heritage Museum and the Kent Museum of Freemasonry.

If you love taking a walk in the great outdoors, there are plenty of spots to enjoy a hike close to Canterbury, including the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Dane John Gardens. Golf fans will enjoy a leisurely round or two at Canterbury Golf Club, while the little ones will love taking a visit to Howletts Wild Animal Park, which is home to the biggest herd of African elephants in the UK.

Education

If you’re moving to Canterbury with a growing family in tow, it’s good to know that there are a number of ‘outstanding’ schools in the area as rated by Ofsted. They include St Thomas’ Catholic School, Blean Primary School, Sturry Church of England Primary School, Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys and Barton Court Grammar School.

For an independent education, private schools in Canterbury include St Christopher’s School, Junior King’s School, Canterbury Steiner School, CATS Canterbury and St Edmund’s School Canterbury. Further education is provided at Canterbury College and Chaucer College. If your children want to go to university while still living at home, Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Kent are both located in the town.

Getting to Canterbury

Located on the A28, close to the M2 and with its own train stations, Canterbury has superb transport links, which is especially convenient if you’re commuting to nearby towns and cities for work. Canterbury is 30 minutes away from Dover by car or 20 minutes by train from Canterbury East, and 40 minutes away from Maidstone by car or one hour by train.

If you’re venturing to London every day, the train journey into St Pancras International from Canterbury West takes around one hour. For international travel, London City Airport is around one hour 15
