Things to see and do

Shepton Mallet has a small but vibrant town centre with shops along the High Street, Town Street, and around the historic Market Place. Kilver Court is a designer shopping village located in the town, set alongside the pretty Kilver Court Gardens, which are open to the public.

The cathedral city of Wells is nearby, where attractions include The Bishop’s Palace, Wells Cathedral and Vicar’s Close. If you have children, they’ll enjoy exploring Wookey Hole Caves, riding on the heritage trains at East Somerset Railway, and discovering local history at Somerset Rural Life Museum. Cowtastic Farm Park and Playbarn, just a short drive away from Shepton Mallet, is also a big hit with the little ones.

For a breath of fresh air, you can take a stroll around RSPB Nature Reserve Ham Wall, go for a hike through the Mendip Hills or Cranborne Chase, or visit Cheddar Caves and Gorge. Other attractions nearby include Glastonbury Abbey, Somerset Lavender, Haynes International Motor Museum and Glastonbury Festival.


If you have school-age children, there are lots of excellent schools in the local area. Horrington Primary School, West Pennard Church of England Primary School, Leigh-Upon-Mendip First School and St Vigor and St John CofE School are all rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, while independent education is available at All Hallows School, Wells Cathedral School and Downside School.

For older children thinking about studying for a degree, the nearest universities are in Bath and Bristol, between 40 and 50 minutes away by car.

Getting to Shepton Mallet

Shepton Mallet is located on the A37, and although the town doesn’t have a train station, journey times to major towns and cities are quick. Travelling by car, Shepton Mallet is 15 minutes from Wells, 35 minutes from Warminster, 40 minutes from Bath and 50 minutes from Bristol.

Going further afield, London is around two hours 30 minutes away from Shepton Mallet by car, or you can catch a train from Bath Spa with a journey time of one hour 35 minutes to Paddington Station. When you’re going on holiday, Bristol Airport is only a 35-minute drive away.
