Located 10 miles north west of Newport in the Ebbw Valley, Abercarn is a former coal mining town set within lovely Welsh countryside. With close proximity to the region’s major cities, new homes in Abercarn offer rural living in commuting distance to NewportCardiff and Bristol.

Transport links

The town is served by the A467, which runs south to Newport and north through Crumlin, Abertillery and Brynmawr. Abercarn does not have its own railway station, with the nearest being located at Newport - a 15 minute drive away or 30 minutes by bus.

Abercarn is well placed for travel to major towns and cities in the area. Caerphilly is just under 20 minutes away by car, Cardiff is 30 minutes via the A467 and M4. Bristol is 45 minutes along the M4 or 35 minutes by train from Newport. Newport station also connects the region to London, with a train journey to the Capital taking just an hour and 55 minutes.

Places of interest

Residents of Abercarn are surrounded by the great outdoors, with Cwmcarn Forest providing 15.5km of mountain biking tracks, a seven mile long scenic Forest Drive, and the chance to walk, camp and enjoy some fishing.

Pen-y-Fan Pond - a canal feeder reservoir near Caerphilly - is a popular summertime destination with picnic spots, rambling trails and an ‘Alien invasion Trail’ for the kids. A short drive away, Pontypool Park has 150 acres of open grassland, woodland and Italian Gardens with tennis courts, bowling greens and Pontypool Park Rugby Ground; the home of Welsh Rugby Union Championship team Pontypool RFC.

The two most notable sports teams in the town are Abercarn United AFC who play football in the Gwent County First Division, and Abercarn RFC who are members of the Welsh Rugby Union Division 3, and act as a feeder club for Newport Gwent Dragons.

Other attractions near to Abercarn include Pontypool Museum, Caerphilly Castle, Llancaiach Fawr Manor and Newport Museum and Art Gallery. Cefn Mably Farm Park is a popular day out for young families, and the town is also close to a themed leisure pool at the Newport Centre, Bowlplex at Cwmbran and a number of soft play centres for younger children.

Educational facilities

Located just 15 minutes from Newport, Abercarn is a short drive away from the University of South Wales which has a campus in the city. The town is also close to Cardiff University and Cardiff Metropolitan University.
