Located in Shropshire just a short drive from Telford, Shifnal is a market town with good transport links to Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Things to see and do
Shifnal is a small but vibrant town, home to lots of independent shops, cafes, restaurants and a monthly farmers’ market. There are a number of historic sites nearby, including Boscobel House and the Royal Oak, the Royal Air Force Museum in Cosford, and The Iron Bridge and Tollhouse, one of ten museums located along the famous Ironbridge Gorge.
If you have children, there are lots of great family-friendly attractions nearby including Lakeside Animal Park, Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom, Town Park and Telford Steam Railway.
For some exercise in the great outdoors, you can take a hike through the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or practice your swing and Shifnal Golf Club. Indoor sporting facilities include Telford Ice Rink, home to one of the country’s top ice hockey teams, and Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre.
For families, it’s good to know that there are a number of excellent schools in the local area. St George’s Church of England Primary School, Newport Girls’ High School Academy Trust and Adams’ Grammar School are all rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, while independent schools include Thomas Telford School and St Dominic’s Brewood.
If your children are older and thinking about studying after sixth form or college, the University Centre Shrewsbury, the University of Wolverhampton, the University of Birmingham and Aston University are all within commuting distance of the town.
Getting to Shifnal
Shifnal is just south of the M54 and has its own train station, so the town is an ideal place to live if you’re commuting to places nearby. The journey from Telford takes just five minutes by train or under 10 minutes by car, while Wolverhampton is 25 minutes from the town by either car or train. Shifnal is a 25-minute drive or 30-minute train journey from Shrewsbury, while Birmingham is only a 40-minute drive away, or 45 minutes by train.
Travelling further afield, London is around two hours 25 minutes from Shifnal by train, changing once at Birmingham New Street. The equivalent car journey takes two hours 50 minutes via the M40, depending on traffic. If you’re going on holiday or taking a business trip abroad, you can get to Birmingham Airport in 45 minutes by car or one hour by train.
