Hatfield History

Boasting a notable history in aerospace engineering, a large aircraft factory was built here and produced aeroplanes for the Second World War, including the Mosquito Fighter Bomber and the Vampire. The site was closed in 1993, yet its history is embedded in local streets and pub names. Hatfield has two parts; the old town and the new town. The new town was built following the Second World War, creating a new town centre and room for further expansion.

Wildlife and nature in Hatfield

In the old town lies Hatfield House, within the striking grounds of the Great Park. You can take a tour of the house to find out the history of the family who’ve lived there since it was built, or take a stroll around the 42 acres of gardens.

Entertainment in Hatfield

In the new town, there are two main shopping centres; The Stable Yard and The Galleria. The Stable Yard contains popular UK shops, and The Galleria is perfect for restaurants, cafes, and houses a large cinema. For a more broad range of shops, London is only 20 minutes away by train.

Hatfield also contains two markets; a general market, and a farmers’ and craft market, which is accredited by FARMA. Here you can sample a variety of locally grown produce including cheese, meat and veg, as well as craft items. The town centre is currently under redevelopment to further improve shopping and services in this area.

Museums in Hatfield

Hatfield has no shortage of culture; take a visit to Mill Green Museum which boasts an 18th century working watermill, as well as art exhibitions, displays about the local history, and craft events for children and adults alike.
