Barry is best known for its seaside resort and pleasure park, Barry Island, where you’ll find roller coasters, crazy golf, amusement arcades, and the popular Blue Flag beach Whitmore Bay.

If you enjoy getting out and about in the great outdoors, Porthkerry Country Park is the ideal place to explore woodlands, meadows, and even an Iron Age fort. Brynhill Barry Golf Club is nearby for a relaxing Sunday morning round, while Wenvoe Castle Golf Club, St Andrews Major Golf Club and Cottrell Park Golf Resort are all within driving distance.

For shopping, Barry town centre is home to a number of high street stores, while the new St David’s Shopping Centre in Cardiff and the McArthur Glen Outlet Village in Bridgend are both just a short drive from the town.

Other popular attractions near Barry include Amelia Trust Farm, The Welsh Hawking Centre, Glamorgan Wartime Heritage Centre and Fonmon Castle.

Education

If you have children, it’s worth knowing there are a number of good schools in Barry, including Barry Island Primary School which is rated ‘Excellent’ by Welsh regulator Estyn. For independent education, private schools near to Barry include Westbourne School, Headlands School and Ely Presbyterian Church School. 

Barry is home to Cardiff and Vale College, while Cardiff University and Cardiff Metropolitan University are both within commuting distance of the town.

Getting to Barry

Barry is just a short drive away from the M4 and has train services that link the town to other major places along the south Wales coast. From Cardiff, the journey to Barry takes 25 minutes by car or train, while the journey from Bridgend takes 30 minutes by either car or train. Swansea is a one hour drive from Barry, while Bristol can be reached in one hour five minutes by car.

If you’re going to London, the car journey takes around three hours via the M4, while the train to Paddington takes two hours 30 minutes with a change at Cardiff Central Station.

For holidays abroad, Barry is close to Cardiff Airport in Rhoose. The journey by car takes less than 15 minutes, so it’s easier to leave the car at home and take a taxi or bus.
