Things to see and do

The biggest town in the Vale of Glamorgan is Barry, located by the sea and home to Barry Island Pleasure Park, Smugglers Cove Adventure Golf and the Memo Arts Centre. Cowbridge is known for its independent shops and annual food festival, while Penarth is home to a number of popular beaches including Rest Bay and Trecco Bay.

If you enjoy getting out in the great outdoors, there are lots of places to go walking or cycling in the Vale of Glamorgan, including Porthkerry Country Park, Dyffryn Gardens, Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes and Cosmeston Lakes Country Park. Beaches in the local area include Whitmore Bay, Dunraven Bay and Ogmore Beach, while the Glamorgan Heritage Coastline is a beautiful place for a seaside stroll.

There are some historic sites in the Vale of Glamorgan, including Coity Castle, Ogmore Castle, St Donat’s Castle and Cosmeston Medieval Village. Bryngarw Country Park, Cowbridge Physic Garden, Kenfig National Nature Reserve and the Grand Pavilion theatre in Porthcawl are all worth a visit.

Education

For families moving to the local area with school-age children, top schools in the Vale of Glamorgan include Stanwell School, Cowbridge Comprehensive School, Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg, St Cyres Comprehensive School, Llantwit Major School and Y Pant Comprehensive.

If your older children want to take a further education course, Atlantic College is located in Llantwit Major, while Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Swansea University and Swansea Metropolitan University are all within commuting distance.

Getting to the Vale of Glamorgan

From Cardiff, the journey to Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan takes 25 minutes by car or less than 20 minutes by train. The journey to Barry from Swansea takes one hour five minutes by car via the M4, while the drive from Bristol takes around one hour 25 minutes.

If you’re travelling further afield to London, the journey from Paddington takes around two hours 30 minutes, changing once at Cardiff Central.

When it’s time to jet off on holiday, the Vale of Glamorgan is home to Cardiff Airport, a 10-minute drive from Barry in Rhoose.
