Things to see and do

Yarm town centre has some small shops, cafes and restaurants, along with a town hall and a monthly farmer’s market. Other attractions include Yarm Viaduct, Preston Park Museum and Grounds, and Eaglescliffe Golf Club.

If you’re moving to the area with children, there are lots of family-friendly places of interest nearby including Kirklevington Riding Centre, crazy golf at Stokesley Golf Range, the Tees Small Gauge Railway and Butterfly World. Newham Grange Country Farm is popular with younger children, while teenagers and grown ups will enjoy getting the adrenaline pumping at Teesside White Water Centre.

In neighbouring Middlesbrough you can browse the exhibits at the Dorman Museum, visit the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art or take a walk through Stewart Park. It’s also home to Middlesbrough FC who play their home matches at the Riverside Stadium.

For days out in the fresh air, the North York Moors National Park is only a short drive away from Yarm, while there are also coastal walks to enjoy nearby.

Education

If you’re moving to the area with children, it’s good to know there are a number of excellent schools in the local area. Yarm Primary School, Junction Farm Primary School and Egglescliffe School are all rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, while private schools nearby include Yarm Preparatory School and Yarm School.

For older children and adults, further and higher education courses are available nearby at Middlesbrough College and Teesside University, and the University of York is also within commuting distance.

Getting to Yarm

Yarm is well-connected by both road and rail, ideal for journeys to Middlesbrough, York, Newcastle and beyond. From Middlesbrough, the journey to Yarm takes around 20 minutes by car or train, while the car journey from Newcastle takes around 55 minutes. Yarm is also 55 minutes away from York by car or 40 minutes by train.

If you’re going further afield, the journey from London takes around three hours by train, changing once in York. When it’s time to go on holiday, Durham Tees Valley Airport is only 15 minutes away from the town, so you can leave the car at home and take a taxi.
