Things to see and do in South Yorkshire
A true haven for nature lovers, South Yorkshire is home to a wide array of expansive natural landscapes. The western part of the county is taken up by the Peak District, providing you with endless opportunities for picturesque walks. Rother Valley Country Park, Langold Country Park and the Linacre Reservoirs are all well worth a visit, while you can pick up a section of the Trans Pennine Trail for a long walk or cycle.
Sheffield is one of the region’s most exciting cities, and a hotbed of culture. With highlights including the Millennium Gallery, Graves Art Gallery and Kelham Island Museum, you can also make the short trip towards Rotherham to visit the Magna Science Adventure Centre, which is perfect for kids. Your little ones will also love a trip to Calypso Cove Waterpark or Sheffield Cable Waterski and Aqua Park.
Education
There’s a strong and varied selection of schools across South Yorkshire for your children to attend. The Sheffield area is particularly good, with some of the top local primaries including Nether Edge Primary, St Catherine’s Catholic Primary and Porter Croft CofE. All of these schools are ranked as outstanding by Ofsted, along with St Mary’s CofE in Barnsley and Herringthorpe’s infant and junior schools.
At secondary level, Barnsley College is also outstanding, along with St Bernard’s Catholic High School in Rotherham. Notre Dame High School and Tapton School are both on the outskirts of Sheffield, and also sit in the education board’s top band.
South Yorkshire transport links
There are strong transport links across South Yorkshire, both for getting around the county itself and to other parts of Yorkshire or beyond.
