Located in West Yorkshire close to Huddersfield and Glossop, Holmfirth is a small, quaint town in the Pennine Hills, perfect if you’re looking for rural living within easy reach of nearby towns and cities. Best known as the backdrop for the TV series Last of the Summer Wine, today Holmfirth is a popular place to live for families of all ages.
Things to see and do
Holmfirth is a lively town, with lots of events taking place throughout the year. Holmfirth Film Festival takes place at the end of May each year, while the town also hosts Art Week and Holmfirth Festival of Folk.
The town has lots of popular independent attractions, including the Picturedrome which has been nominated as the ‘Best Small Venue’ by music magazine NME. The Summer Wine Exhibition celebrates the famous TV series and is located in character Compo’s house. Exhibits include set props and costumes, and a timeline stretching across the programme’s 37-year history.
Other attractions in Holmfirth include The Potter’s Den, Holmfirth Mystery Treasure Trail and Ashley Jackson Gallery. If you’re moving to the area with children, there are lots of great family days out nearby including Beaumont Park, Huddersfield Climbing Centre, Cliffe House and Colne Valley Museum in Huddersfield, and Eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax.
Education
For families with school-age children, there are a number of ‘outstanding’ schools in the local area, as rated by Ofsted. These include Netherthong Primary School, Thurstonland Endowed Voluntary Controlled First School, Honley Church of England Voluntary Controlled Infant and Nursery School, Farnley Tyas Church of England Voluntary Controlled First School, Moor End Academy and Shelley College.
If you’re looking for independent education, private schools in the local area include Huddersfield Grammar School and Edgerton College, while higher education is provided a short drive away at the University of Huddersfield, which was named the Times Higher Education ‘University of the Year’ in 2013.
Getting to Holmfirth
Although Holmfirth train station closed to passengers in 1959, the town still has good road links to nearby towns and cities, along with regular bus services from Hampshire bus station. Huddersfield is the nearest large town, around 20 minutes away from Holmfirth by car or 30 minutes by bus. Wakefield is 40 minutes away by car or one hour by bus, while Barnsley can be reached in just 30 minutes.
Travelling slightly further afield, Leeds is a 45-minute drive away from Holmfirth, while Manchester can be reached in one hour via the A635. The journey to and from London takes three hours 50 minutes by car from Holmfirth, or around two hours by train from Wakefield.
If you’re going abroad, Holmfirth is 50 minutes away from Manchester Airport, 55 minutes from Leeds Bradford Airport and one hour away from Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
