Things to see and do

Yeovil and the surrounding area is home to a number of historic sites, including the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Montacute TV Radio Toy Museum and Haynes International Motor Museum. Montacute House, an Elizabethan estate now run by the National Trust is nearby, while Sherborne Castle is also only a short drive away.

If you’re moving to the area with children, they’ll enjoy exploring Forde Abbey House and Gardens, playing at Newton Surmaville Park and riding on the miniature trains at the Yeovil Railway Centre. For the grown ups, The Swan and The Octagon theatres offer evening entertainment.

Other places of interest within easy reach of Yeovil include Tintinhull Garden, Glastonbury Abbey, Wells Cathedral and the world-famous Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm in Pilton.

Education

If you’re moving to Yeovil with school-age children, it’s good to know that there are a number of excellent schools in the local area. Pen Mill Infants’ School and Huish Primary School are both rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, while independent education is on offer at Laurel Park School.

For higher education, your older children can study for a degree at the University of Bath and the University of Exeter, both just over one hour’s commute from the town.

Getting to Yeovil

Yeovil is well-connected by both road and rail, ideal if you’re commuting for work or travelling to see family and friends. There are two train stations in the town, with regular services to Bristol, London and beyond, while the A37 is the road connecting Yeovil with neighbouring towns and cities.

To get to Exeter, the car journey takes around one hour 10 minutes, while Bristol can be reached in one hour 15 minutes by car or one hour 35 minutes by train. Bath and Salisbury are just over an hour’s drive away, and Southampton can be reached in one hour 30 minutes by car.

If you’re going to London, you can get to the capital in two hours 20 minutes by train. When it’s holiday time, Bristol Airport is only an hour’s drive from the town, so your adventures can get off to a quick and easy start.
