Things to see and do
Telford has a modern town centre, with restaurants, a library, ice rink and cinema at the Southwater Leisure complex, high street and independent shops at Telford Shopping Centre, and mini golf, cycle routes and play areas at Telford Town Park.
One of the most famous local sights in the Ironbridge Gorge, which is home to ten museums including Coalport China Museum and Blists Hill Victorian Town. Buildwas Abbey and Benthall Hall are also nearby, both ideal settings for a relaxing weekend walk.
Telford is a big sporting town, home to a successful ice hockey team along with the Telford Raiders rugby team, AFC Telford United football team, the Shropshire Warriors basketball club and the American Football team, Shropshire Revolution. If you want to practice your swing, Horsehay Village Golf Centre and The Shropshire Golf Course are only a short drive from the town centre.
Education
For families moving to the area, it’s good to know there are a number of excellent schools in and around the town. St George’s Church of England Primary School, the independent Thomas Telford School, Adams’ Grammar School and Newport Girls’ High School Academy Trust are all rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.
If your children are thinking about taking a degree course and want to be close to home, the University of Wolverhampton has a campus in Telford.
Getting to Telford
Whether you’re commuting to work or visiting friends and family, Telford is well-connected by both road and rail for easy travel. The M54 bypasses the town and links with the M6, while the Telford Central Station runs services to Shrewsbury, Birmingham and beyond.
Shrewsbury is a 20-minute train journey from Telford, or 30 minutes by car, while the journey to Wolverhampton takes around 30 minutes by car or 15 minutes by train. If you’re travelling from Birmingham, the journey to Telford takes 35 minutes by car or just under 40 minutes by train.
For journeys to London, it takes two hours 20 minutes to reach Euston by train from Telford Central, with one change at Birmingham New Street. When it’s time for a well-earned break, Birmingham Airport is 55 minutes away by car or 50 minutes by train to Birmingham International.
