Things to see and do

Newark is a historic town, home to Newark Castle and Newark Air Museum. For relaxing weekend shopping trips, you can browse the independent boutiques and high street stores at St Mark’s Place and the Buttermarket Shopping Centre, while nearby Nottingham is home to the intu Victoria Centre and Exchange Arcade.

For sports fans, Newark hosts regular horse racing events at Newark Racecourse, and Southwell Racecourse is also nearby. Nottingham is home to Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, while football is played at The City Ground and Meadow Lane.

When you want to explore the great outdoors, you can go walking through Riverside Park, practice your swing at Newark Golf Club, or take a day trip to the Peak District National Park where you can go hiking or cycling along one of the many trails.

Education

If you’re moving to a new home in Newark with kids, it’s good to know there are a number of excellent schools nearby, including the ‘outstanding’ Barnby Road Academy Primary and Nursery School, and independent education at High fields School.

For older children thinking about studying for a degree without going far from home, the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University are both within commuting distance.

Getting to Newark

Newark is well-connected by road and rail, with two train stations providing regular services to Nottingham, London and beyond. The town is a 30 minute train journey or 35 minute drive from Nottingham, a 45 minute drive from Leicester and one hour from Sheffield by car or train.

For journeys to London, the train from Newark North Gate station to King’s Cross takes just one hour 25 minutes. When it’s holiday time, East Midlands Airport is only a 45 minute drive from the town.
