Live the Life

Located in the North East of England just a short drive from Newcastle, the Tyne and Wear town of Washington is a welcoming place ideally situated for commuters travelling to neighbouring towns and cities. Things to see and do

Washington is close to a number of popular places of interest, including the WWT Washington Wetland Centre where you can see all kinds of birds, insects and mammals such as otters, flamingos and geese. There’s also a play area for the little ones, and events scheduled throughout the year.

At the Arts Centre Washington you can watch live music, dance performances and theatre, along with films at the on-site cinema. Washington ‘F’ Pit is also one of the town’s historic highlights, where you can discover more about the area’s mining heritage with exhibits dating back to the Victorian era. At Washington Old Hall, you can discover more about the town’s fascinating links with the former US President George Washington.

Other local attractions within driving distance of Washington include Riverside Park in Chester le Street, Bowes Railway and Bill Quay Community Farm in Gateshead, and Herrington Country Park in Sunderland. Newcastle is nearby, where you can find the Discovery Museum, Seven Stories National Centre for Children’s Books and the Laing Art Gallery.

Washington is also close to a number of sporting facilities such as Sunderland Aquatic Centre, Pockerley Riding School, Sunderland Climbing Centre and George Washington Golf Course. If you’re a football fan, Sunderland A.F.C play their home matches at the Stadium of Light, while Newcastle F.C play at St James’ Park.

Outstanding schools in the local area include Lambton Primary School, St Joseph’s Catholic Junior School, Ravensworth Terrace Primary School, The Hermitage Academy and Cardinal Hume Catholic School, while Emmanuel College provides independent education.
