Things to see and do

There are lots of historical sights in Huntingdon, including the Cromwell Museum which is located in Oliver Cromwell’s former schoolhouse and shows artefacts including clothing, armour, and one of his death masks. On the Historic Town Trail, you can take a self-guided tour to discover Huntingdon in times gone by, finishing your walk at the National Trust’s Houghton Mill.

If you want to go shopping, the centre of Huntingdon is pedestrianised and is home to independent boutiques, high street stores and a regular market. After browsing the shops, Riverside Park is a great place to relax and enjoy a picnic on sunny days.

For a breath of fresh air, Portholme Meadow and Hinchingbrooke Country Park are popular with families, cyclists and dog walkers, while Thetford Forest Park is just a short drive away from the town. Children will enjoy visiting the National Trust’s Wimpole Home Farm, an 18th-century farm and a centre for rare breeds including cows, pigs, sheep and horses.

If you’re a big sports fan, Huntingdon Racecourse hosts regular meets and events throughout the year, while Brampton Park Golf Club is perfect for a leisurely round. For watersports including windsurfing and sailing, Grafham Water Centre and Purvis Marine are close-by.

Education

If you’re moving to Huntingdon with children, there are a number of ‘outstanding’ schools in the local area including Hartford Infant School, Buckden CofE Primary School and Westfield Junior School. Huntingdonshire Regional College has a wide range of further education courses, while the University of Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin University and Peterborough Regional College are within commuting distance.

Getting to Huntingdon

With excellent road and rail links to nearby towns and cities, Huntingdon is a popular commuter town. Travelling by car, Huntingdon is 30 minutes away from Cambridge, one hour 15 minutes from Leicester and one hour 30 minutes from Birmingham. The town is just 15 minutes away from Peterborough by train, or 30 minutes by car.

If you’re commuting into the capital, the train from Huntington to London Kings Cross takes around one hour 10 minutes. When you’re going on holiday, Cambridge International Airport can be reached in 30 minutes via the A14, while London Stansted Airport is 50 minutes away by car and London Luton Airport is one hour away.
